How would you describe UBE’s High Performance Coating portfolio and DAXSOL® to someone who doesn’t know UBE?
UBE is a global chemical company that, through UBE Corporation Europe in Castellón (Spain), supplies high value-added solvents and carbonates for coatings and related industries.
DAXSOL® is UBE’s range of high-performance, biodegradable carbonate solutions, currently with two products: DAXSOL® Dimethyl carbonate, a VOC-free solvent, and DAXSOL® Glycerol carbonate, a bio-based, dual-function carbonate.
What are the two DAXSOL® products and what is each one for?
DAXSOL® Dimethyl carbonate: a clear, colorless, VOC-free solvent for coatings and adhesives, as a reagent in chemical and pharmaceutical synthesis, as an electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries, and as a cleaning agent.
DAXSOL® Glycerol carbonate: a bio-based carbonate used as a solvent, diluent, plasticizer and reactive building block across coatings, construction, cosmetics and automotive.
Where are they used, and which applications are currently in focus?
Both can work as a solvent or as a reactant, which is what makes the range so versatile.
DAXSOL® Dimethyl carbonate is focused on coatings, adhesives, paint systems and battery electrolytes, where it replaces conventional solvents such as toluene, xylene or ketones.
DAXSOL® Glycerol Carbonate is primarily used in coatings and paints, including intumescent fire-protection systems, as well as in adhesives, construction, automotive and cosmetic applications. It can be used both as a direct formulation ingredient and as a reactive building block, particularly as an isocyanate-blocking agent in polyurethane (PU) systems.
What are the particularities of each DAXSOL®?
DAXSOL® Dimethyl carbonate is a lower-impact, drop-in substitute for conventional polar solvents: low VOC profile, non-mutagenic and readily biodegradable.
DAXSOL® Glycerol carbonate stands out for its bio-based origin and its dual reactivity, which lets a single product cover many applications and act as a safer alternative to hazardous components, for example being part of an alternative system to traditional isocyanate blocking agent or as a new interesting component in intumescent paint formulations
Do the DAXSOL® products carry any bio-based certification?
Yes, DAXSOL® Glycerol carbonate has a 76 % bio-based content, USDA-certified.
Why are they considered safer options?
DAXSOL® Dimethyl carbonate has low toxicity and low VOC profile, is non-mutagenic and is readily biodegradable. DAXSOL® Glycerol carbonate combines low toxicity with a high flash point, non-flammable behaviour and it is not classified as hazardous under the CLP regulation; replacing isocyanates further reduces health risks for formulators.
With all these benefits, what about performance?
Performance is maintained in both cases. DAXSOL® Dimethyl carbonate delivers solvency comparable to the solvents it replaces, keeping formulations stable. Coatings formulated with DAXSOL® glycerol carbonate-such as isocyanate-free polyurethane coatings-offer excellent thermal stability, chemical resistance, adhesion and flexibility, so the bio-based and safety benefits don’t come at the expense of technical quality.
How can I request a DAXSOL® sample or technical support?
Both products are available in industrial packaging as well as smaller sample cans.
Contact your regional UBE partner or this form to request a sample, the technical datasheet, or formulation support.
