Polyimide varnish is used across thermal-resistant coatings, electronics, insulation and battery applications for its combination of thermal stability, chemical resistance and electrical insulation. Most of these varnishes are based on NMP (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) as a solvent, a well-established chemistry, but one that comes with regulatory requirements customers increasingly want to simplify.
Within UBE’s UPIA® varnish product line, the UPIA® NF series was developed as a water-based alternative meeting the same performance of conventional NMP-based grades. Before looking at what makes this specific grade different, it helps to first place it within UBE’s broader polyimide portfolio and specifically high-performing coatings.
Q1. Manuel, to start from the beginning, where does UPIA® sit within UBE’s polyimide business?
UPIA® is UBE’s polyimide varnish platform and an important part of our broader polyimide portfolio. Most people know UBE for its deep expertise in BPDA-based polyimides, which includes three main product families: UPILEX® films, UPIA® varnishes and UIP® powders. Each serves different market needs, but they all benefit from the same core technology and know-how that UBE has been developing for decades.
Within that portfolio, UPIA® is the coating and varnish solution. It enables customers to bring the outstanding heat resistance, electrical insulation, mechanical strength and chemical resistance of polyimides into coatings, films, binders and advanced material systems. Today, it plays a key role in applications ranging from electronics and industrial insulation to emerging next-generation technologies.
Q2. Before we get into the NF series specifically, what does a standard UPIA® varnish grade look like, and what’s it normally used for?
Traditional UPIA® grades, including series such as AT and ST, are solvent-based polyimide varnishes that have built a strong track record in demanding applications. They are typically selected when customers need a combination of high thermal stability, excellent dielectric properties and long-term durability under harsh operating conditions.
These materials are commonly used in electrical insulation systems, magnet wire coatings, flexible electronics, industrial belts, protective coatings and a variety of high-temperature applications where conventional polymers simply cannot perform.
Q3. So what exactly is different about the UPIA® NF series?
UPIA® NF represents the next evolution of our varnish technology. The most significant difference is that it is a fully water-based, NMP-free polyimide varnish. This means customers can access the benefits of high-performance polyimides while significantly reducing solvent-related environmental concerns.
What makes the technology particularly exciting is that sustainability does not come at the expense of performance. UPIA® NF has been designed to maintain the heat resistance, insulation performance and mechanical properties expected from BPDA-based polyimides while also offering additional advantages such as reduced VOC content, improved environmental compatibility and curing options starting from as low as 150 °C depending on the grade. This opens the door to applications and substrates that are difficult to address with conventional solvent-based systems.
Q4. Is moving away from NMP mainly a regulatory question, or is it also something customers are asking for directly?
It’s definitely both, and that’s what makes the transition so interesting.
On one side, regulatory developments, particularly in Europe, are increasing pressure on the use of NMP and creating additional compliance requirements for manufacturers. Many companies are actively looking for ways to simplify regulatory management and reduce solvent-related costs and administrative burdens.
At the same time, we’re seeing strong market pull from customers themselves. Sustainability goals, workplace safety initiatives and corporate environmental commitments are becoming major drivers of material selection. Customers increasingly want solutions that reduce VOC emissions, improve handling conditions and support their ESG objectives, while still delivering the performance they need. UPIA® NF aligns very well with those expectations.
Q5. What can customers expect from UPIA® NF in terms of performance compared to the standard NMP-based grades?
One of the biggest surprises for many customers is just how identical the performance is to conventional solvent-based polyimides.
UPIA® NF is built on UBE’s BPDA technology and maintains the key characteristics that make polyimides such valuable engineering materials, including heat resistance, electrical insulation, mechanical strength and chemical resistance. In some grades, customers can also benefit from additional features such as very high toughness and elongation, lower-temperature curing capabilities and greater processing flexibility.
From a business perspective, the objective was to create a solvent-free alternative capable of delivering performance levels comparable to traditional NMP-based systems while expanding the range of potential applications.
Q6. What applications is UPIA® NF best suited for today?
Today we’re seeing opportunities across a surprisingly broad range of applications.
Some of the strongest interest comes from insulation coatings for EMI shielding and magnet wire, heat-resistant paints and coatings, protective coatings, sensor substrates and flexible electronic materials. We’re also looking at opportunities in composite materials, carbon-based dispersions, electromagnetic compatibility solutions and specialty industrial coatings.
What is particularly interesting is that UPIA® NF is not only replacing existing polyimide systems. In several cases, customers are exploring completely new applications where the combination of water-based processing and polyimide performance creates possibilities that were previously very difficult to achieve.
Q7. Which industries or customers are showing the most interest in a water-based polyimide varnish?
Interest is growing across several strategic industries.
We’re seeing strong engagement from electronics and semiconductor companies, e-mobility manufacturers, advanced coatings suppliers, energy-related industries and composite material developers. In Europe in particular, the combination of sustainability requirements and demand for high-performance materials is creating significant momentum.
What’s common among these industries is that they cannot compromise on performance. They still require thermal stability, insulation and durability, but they also want materials that support environmental objectives and future regulatory requirements. That’s exactly where UPIA® NF creates value.
Q8. As the person driving business development for polyimide, what’s the near-term priority for UPIA® NF?
Our immediate priority is helping customers move from interest to qualification and ultimately to commercialization.
The market response has been very encouraging, particularly in Europe, where inquiries and sample evaluations have increased significantly. The next step is demonstrating how customers can successfully integrate UPIA® NF into real manufacturing environments and achieve the same level of performance they expect from conventional solvent-based polyimides.
At the same time, we’re focused on identifying new opportunities that are unique to water-based polyimide technology. Beyond replacing existing materials, we believe the biggest long-term opportunity lies in developing entirely new applications where sustainability, processing flexibility and high performance can create additional value for customers. That’s where we see the future growth potential of UPIA® NF.
