UBE Corporation (President: Masato Izumihara; hereinafter “UBE”) submitted a commitment letter to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)*1 to acquire certification for its science-based GHG emission reduction targets. In the commitment letter, the company has committed to set near-term company-wide emission reductions in line with climate science with the SBTi, for validation within two years*2.
The company will strive to promote the reduction of GHG emissions along the overall supply chain, aligned with the standards required by the Paris Agreement and the recommendation of the 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which aim to keep the global temperature rise this century well below 2ºC versus pre-industrial levels, and to strive to limit the temperature increase even further, to 1.5ºC.
The UBE Group aims to further tackle global environmental issues and realize the UBE Vision 2030 Transformation that envisages the formation of a corporate group centered on specialty chemicals that contributes to the global environment, human health, and an enriched future society.
*1. The initiative is a collaboration between the following four institutions, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNCG), World Resource Institute (WRI), and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), to evaluate the GHG emissions goals of companies from an independent stance.
*2. According to the SBTi criteria, absolute and intensity-based emission reduction near-term targets must cover a minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 10 years from the date the target is submitted to the SBTi for validation.
