Polyurethanes are widely used in the coatings industry due to their excellent versatility and performance. Traditionally, they are synthesized through the reaction of polyols with isocyanates, compounds known for their high toxicity and harmful environmental impact, as they are derived from phosgene. This has led to a strong demand for safer, more sustainable alternatives.
DAXSOL® Glycerol Carbonate (GC) offers an effective, bio-based solution to replace isocyanates in the formulation of non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs). By using GC, it is possible to produce waterborne NIPU (WNIPU) coatings that maintain the desirable mechanical and chemical properties of conventional polyurethanes while significantly reducing toxicity and improving environmental compatibility.
The formulation process involves the synthesis of aqueous cyclic carbonate dispersions using aromatic anhydrides such as TMA, PMDA, and BTDA, which are reacted with GC under specific temperature and pressure conditions. These dispersions are then mixed with various diamines to produce WNIPU films, which are cured through controlled heating cycles.
The resulting coatings are glossy, impact-resistant, highly adhesive, flexible, and mechanically strong. Chemical resistance tests show excellent performance against solvents like xylene, toluene, 50% ethanol, and 5% sulfuric acid. While alkali resistance is lower, the coatings still maintain structural integrity in most tested environments.
Thermal stability is another key advantage: WNIPU coatings begin decomposition above 242 °C and do not exhibit phase separation, ensuring uniformity and durability. DAXSOL® GC itself is non-toxic, has low volatility, is readily biodegradable, and contains 76% USDA-certified bio-based content—making it an ideal choice for eco-friendly polyurethane development. This technology enables the production of safer, high-performance polyurethane coatings without the use of hazardous isocyanates, contributing to more sustainable industrial practices without compromising quality or performance.
