Oxygen Barrier and Mechanical Performance in Silage Films

Silage film applications require materials capable of combining mechanical durability with effective oxygen barrier performance. These characteristics play an important role in maintaining film integrity while helping to limit gas transmission. In these structures, polymer selection directly influences the balance between strength, resistance to damage, and barrier behaviour.

UBE NYLON® provides several grades for silage film applications, including standard and functional polyamide solutions. Comparative data obtained from 50 µm monolayer airblown films illustrates how nylon-based materials differ from conventional polyethylene structures in both mechanical and barrier characteristics.

Mechanical behaviour varies significantly depending on polymer composition. PA6/6.6 UBE NYLON®  5033B shows considerably higher tensile strength at break than LDPE and higher tensile elongation at break under the evaluated conditions. These differences illustrate how polymer composition influences mechanical behaviour.

Resistance to puncture is a key requirement in demanding applications. The evaluated PA6/6.6 grade reaches a puncture energy value of 31 mJ, compared with 4.5 mJ for LDPE. The material also exhibits greater deformation before failure, indicating enhanced resistance to mechanical stress.

Barrier performance is another important factor in silage film design. Oxygen transmission behaviour changes considerably according to the material structure used. Under the evaluated conditions, the oxygen transmission rate decreases from 3000 ml/m²·day for LDPE to 30 ml/m²·day for PA6/6.6 UBE NYLON® 5033B.

UBE offers standard grades such as UBE NYLON® 1030B, 5032B and 5034B, as well as functional grades including UBE NYLON® 5034FDX17 and 6434B for silage film applications.
