UBE NYLON Grades for Shrink Film Applications

Shrink Films with Tailored Shrinkage and Barrier Performance

Shrink film applications in food packaging require materials capable of balancing shrinkage behavior and gas barrier performance. Packaging integrity, product protection and processing efficiency depend strongly on the selection of polymer structures adapted to the final application requirements. In these applications, material selection plays an important role in achieving the required balance between film contraction and permeability.

UBE NYLON offers several polyamide grades for shrink film applications, with different nylon compositions providing varying shrinkage and permeation characteristics depending on the polymer type used. This allows film performance to be adjusted according to packaging requirements.

Higher CO2/O2 permeation ratios are particularly relevant for cheese packaging, as they allow the CO2 generated during cheese maturation to be released from the package while maintaining the required packaging performance.

Among the grades presented, UBE NYLON 1030B (PA6) shows shrinkage ratios of 26% in MD and 31% in TD. UBE NYLON 5034B (PA6/6.6) reaches 35% MD and 40% TD shrinkage, while UBE NYLON 6434B (PA6/6.6/12) presents the highest shrinkage values shown, reaching 42% MD and 45% TD. These variations illustrate how polyamide composition directly influences shrink film behavior.

The materials also present varying CO2/O2 permeation ratios depending on the nylon structure and composition. UBE NYLON 1030B shows a ratio of 3.5, while UBE NYLON 5034B reaches 4.5. UBE NYLON 6434B increases this value to 5.5, and UBE NYLON 7034B (PA6/12) achieves the highest ratio presented, at 6. This range of properties supports the development of shrink films with specific barrier performance requirements.

UBE also provides both standard and functional grades for shrink film applications, including UBE NYLON 5034B, 6434B, 7034B, 5033FDX57 and 5034FDX17. Different nylon structures therefore provide distinct balances between shrinkage performance and gas permeation behavior.
