Towards sustainable flame-retardant solutions with DAXSOL® Glycerol Carbonate

In the search for safer and more sustainable materials, flame-retardant technologies are under increasing scrutiny. Traditional intumescent coatings, which expand when exposed to heat to form a protective, insulating char layer, have relied heavily on compounds such as pentaerythritol as their carbon source. While effective, these ingredients are not always aligned with the growing demand for environmentally friendly, low-toxicity alternatives.

UBE’s DAXSOL® Glycerol Carbonate (GC) offers a promising bio-based solution. With a certified renewable carbon content of 76%, low toxicity, and ready biodegradability, this compound represents a clear step forward in the design of next-generation intumescent systems. Its dual versatility as both a carbon source and a CO₂ generator makes it particularly suitable for replacing traditional materials while maintaining, and even enhancing, performance.

When temperatures rise above 200°C, intumescent materials undergo a chemical transformation that leads to swelling, thermal insulation, and flame resistance. DAXSOL® Glycerol Carbonate enables this process through two distinct mechanisms. First, GC can react with acidic components in the formulation to produce esterification and carbonization, while simultaneously forming intermediates such as 3-hydroxypropanal that improve the structure of the char. This process, in combination with melamine as a propellant, ensures effective CO₂ release and expansion.

Alternatively, GC can be incorporated directly into the polymeric backbone of the resin. In this scenario, its decomposition at high temperatures generates glycidol and CO₂, making it possible to achieve the necessary swelling effect without relying on a separate propellant agent. This second pathway not only streamlines formulations but also supports the creation of cleaner, safer coatings.

By integrating DAXSOL® Glycerol Carbonate into intumescent coatings, manufacturers can benefit from:

  • Alternative for melamine and pentaerythritol.
  • Low volatility and toxicity.
  • Certified 76% renewable carbon content.
  • Flexible incorporation routes for improved performance.

In short, UBE’s innovation shows how chemistry can actively support fire safety while reducing environmental impact.
